Mummey
Obituary # 9
Mary
Sigrist Mummey
Mary
Mummey was a faithful supporter of the Mummey Family Reunion, and her death on
January 13, 1999 is a loss to the whole family. Mary was not a Mummey by birth,
but was wise enough to marry one. She was born in 1922 as Mary Ellen Sigrist.
She was married November 21, 1942 to James William Mummey who preceded her in
death in 1992.
James
was the son of Elwood Jewett Mummey, and the grandson of George Washington
Mummey, the 8th of the 12 children of Ephraim Mummey. James and Mary lived in
the Zanesville, Ohio area for most of their lives, raising four children,
David, Patricia, Richard, and Rose. Once they learned of the Mummey reunion
(thanks to Merle Hudson), James and Mary were staunch supporters, on most
occasions bringing the largest number of family members to the reunion. After
the death of her husband, Mary continued to support the Mummey reunion, always
bringing a large contingent of her family with her. Mary had been in very poor
health for several years, which prevented her from attending the most recent
reunions.
In
addition to her children, Mary is survived by fourteen grandchildren. She also
had many great-grandchildren, but I'm sure that the number has increased since
we last got a count. The James and Mary Mummey family has been critical to the
success of the reunion Their support helped keep our organization alive when
the numbers began to dwindle. Mary always was glad to see you, pleasant to
converse with, and watched over her family like a mother hen over her chicks.
Our condolences go out to her family, along with our thoughts and prayers. Mary
will be missed, and her contributions to the reunion will never be forgotten.
