Mummey Mystery #1
In
trying to put together a history of the Mummey family, you come across
situations that drive you crazy because you can't put all the pieces together.
For
example, Christopher Mummey's oldest daughter, Rebecca, was born in
Maryland in about 1788. Somewhere along
the line she got married to Thomas Hill, and the couple was in Morgan County,
Ohio before 1830. Thomas was working as
a saltmaker, a common trade at that time, as it was one of the first industries
in Morgan County.
According
to the censuses, they lived in Meigsville township in 1830, Windsor township in
1840 and Bloom township in 1850. In both 1860 and 1870, they are listed as
living in the town of New Castle in Meigsville township. The 1875 Atlas of Morgan County shows their
residence in the town. If you don’t
recognize the town of New Castle as being in Morgan County, it’s because it is
now called Neelyville.
In
the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses, living with the Hills was an Elizabeth
Mummey, born about 1807. No other persons are listed.
Rebecca
Hill died in 1875, her husband in 1871, and both deaths are listed in the
official Morgan County death records.
The
questions about this family that remain unanswered are:
o
Where
are Rebecca and Thomas Hill buried? Are they in unmarked graves in McKendree?
Were their stones destroyed when Christopher's was?
o
Did
they have any children? If so, what happened to them?
o Who was Elizabeth Mummey and
what happened to her? There is no record in the 1880 census. Could she have
been another daughter of Christopher's?
If not, who was she?
Any
ideas or information would be greatly appreciated.
