Christopher Mummey

0. Christopher Mummey

born: 2 Apr 1753 Germantown, Philadelphia Co., PA
died: between 1835-40 Morgan Co., OH
buried: McKendree Cem., Morgan Co., OH
children:

1. Rebecca                         1787 MD

2. Joshua                            1792 VA

3. John                               1795 PA

4. Charles                           1797 VA

5. Eleanor                           1803 PA

6. Thomas                          1807 VA

Christopher is the earliest known forefather of the Mummey family that settled in southeastern Ohio in the early part of the 1800s. Almost all of the families with the name Mummey throughout the United States can be traced back to him. Several others lines have not been connected, but some are definitely related.

Birth

Christopher's date and place of birth are among the few known statistics about him that are not open to question. In his pension claim in 1832, he is quoted; "I was born the second day of April 1753 at Germantown within seven miles of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania." Nothing to contradict this has been found, and all census records are compatible.

In 1753, Pennsylvania was still a British colony. The American Revolution was twenty years away. Germantown had been founded in 1683 by settlers from German seeking religious freedom. Thus it is very likely , but not certain, that Christopher was of German descent. We don't know how long he lived in Germantown, but if he did for very long, he must have spoken German to some extent, as German was the primary language of the town. We do know that he was illiterate.

Nothing is known of Christopher Mummey's childhood. He may have moved to the Baltimore, Maryland area, but this is only speculation, based on the movement of other Mummeys and his possible subsequent dealings in that city. Also, Baltimore is along the typical migration route to Ohio.

Military Service

Christopher Mummey next appears on a roster dated 19 Mar 1778 of men drafted for militia service in Ohio County, Virginia. He would have been 25 years old at the time. There is no evidence that Christopher Mummey served in the militia at this time, but he did 17 months later. In his pension claim, he says that he volunteered for duty in August of 1779 while living in "what is now called Brooke Co., Virginia." The term of service was for six months.

His specific unit was a company formed in Charlestown by Samuel Teeters, which immediately left for Fort Pitt. There they rendezvoused with other troops for an expedition against the Seneca Indian towns on the upper Allegheny river. In command was Colonel Daniel Brodhead, and the expedition started out on 11 Aug 1779. They marched up the Allegheny, almost to the New York border. When they returned on September 14, they had accomplished the burning of eight towns, 130 dwellings and 500 acres of corn, and the capture of assorted copper kettles, horses, knives and furs - plunder worth $30,000 by one estimate. An account of the action can be found in Council Fires on the Upper Ohio.

To fill out the term of service, Christopher was assigned to a stockade fort "called Wells Fort situated on a ridge between the waters of Buffaloe and Cross Creek in Virginia." This emergency haven, erected for the safety of nearby settlers in the event of Indian attack, was close to his home. As part of his duties, he made scouts into the Indian territory across the Ohio River, into what is now eastern Ohio, and where he would live a few years later.

Marriage

It has been reported that Christopher Mummey married a Katie Smith in Wellsburg on 1 Jul 1775, but no documentation has been seen by this author. Family tradition of the Ohio branch of the Mummey family says she was a full-blooded Indian.

According to records, a Christopher Mumma married a Sarah Wright in Baltimore, Maryland in 1787. That this is the same person as Christopher Mummey is consistent with family history maintained by the Iowa branch of the Mummey family, and is supported by other records:

  • The 1807 estate proceeding for Sarah Wright's grandfather says that she was married to Christopher Mummey and was "living on the Ohio".
  • The 1840 Morgan County Ohio census does not list Christopher (he presumably having died), but does list a Sarah Mummey, over 70 years of age.
  • The only Mummey family listed in the 1830 Morgan County census with a woman old enough to be Sarah was Christopher's.
  • Mrs. Thomas Hill, presumed to be the oldest child of Christopher, always listed Maryland as her state of birth on census, and her birthdate, calculated from census data, was 1787 or 1788.

Children

There is no definite source for the names of Christopher Mummey's children. The longest list is contained in the Twelve Children article, which was published after all the children were dead. On it are Charles, John, Joshua, Thomas, Mrs. Rebecca Hill and Mrs. Eleanor Hammond. The qualifying statement "among those who came to Morgan County" that precedes the list allows for others to exist. Robertson's account of Thomas Mummey lists Thomas, Ellen and Elizabeth as children of Christopher Mummey. As Thomas was living at the time of publication, it is likely this information is accurate. Why the additional children aren't listed is a mystery.

Movements

To figure out where Christopher Mummey was at a particular time, it is useful to work backwards in time. From his statements in the pension claim, Christopher had been in Morgan County "about eight years" in November 1832. His son, Thomas gave an 1823 date in Robertson for his arrival in Morgan County. Robertson also states that voting records show Christopher present "before 1825." In addition, a daughter married in Morgan County in March 1825. Thus 1823 seems to be reasonable.

Eight years in Harrison County, again according to the pension claim, puts Christopher's arrival there in 1815.

Before that, he says he was on the farms of Francis McGuire and Alexander Wells, the first being on the state line between Virginian and Pennsylvania. He doesn't mention any time frames, or living elsewhere. The children born between 1790 and 1810 give either Virginia or Pennsylvania as their birthplace.

The 1810 census puts Christopher in Brooke County, which would correspond to being on Alexander Wells' farm.

The 1800 census has him in
Washington County, Pennsylvania. This likely means he is on the Francis Mcguire farm during this time.

In a 1796 document, Christopher and Sarah Mummey, "of Washington Co.," give power of attorney to John and Joshua Wright of Baltimore to sell land in Frederick County, Maryland. This means a return to the panhandle area before this time. The oldest known son, Joshua, claimed to have been born in 1792 in Pennsylvania..

But, if Christopher Mummey did indeed marry Sarah Wright, he must have been in Baltimore in 1787. Other records show that he may have been there for some time:

  • Christopher Mummey witnesses a will in Baltimore County in 1784
  • Christopher Mummey is a head of household in Baltimore County in the 1790 census
  • Christopher Mummay is in the Baltimore County militia in 1794
  • Christopher Mummey is a debtor in Baltimore County in 1794.

There is no guarantee that these are the same person, but it is possible that any or all are Christopher.

The question arises: If Christopher Mummey was in Baltimore, why didn't he list living there in his pension claim? It is possible that he didn't consider it a permanent residence, just a visit.

Putting all this together in a time line

1779 in Brooke Co.
1782 to Baltimore
1791 to Maguire farm, Brooke Co.
1808 to Wells farm, Brooke Co.
1814 to Harrison Co.
1823 to Morgan Co.

This, of course, is very speculative. However, the statement in Robertson on page 464 that Christopher arrived in Morgan County in 1818 is not accurate. His son Joshua did arrive about this time, and it is likely that this is the source of the misinformation.

Death and Interment

Christopher Mummey died in Morgan County on the "Hutchins farm" according to Robertson, who presumably got the information from Thomas Mummey, the youngest son, who was alive when the Robertson wrote his book. A farm owned by R. Hutchins is shown on the Windsor County map in Lake's atlas, which was published around the same time as Robertson.

Christopher was buried in
McKendree Cemetery, outside McConnelsville, Morgan County, Ohio. His tombstone, and likely that of his wife's also, were destroyed when a farmer, plowing a field on the nearby Hammond farm, lost control of his team of horses and they ran through the cemetery. Thus the exact date of his death is uncertain. It is known that the Pension Department listed him in a 1835 compilation, and that his pension application was still being process in May of 1833. He does not appear on the 1840 census, his death must have occurred before then.

A replacement marker was obtained from the Federal Government in 1974, and was placed in a location that is considered to be within several feet of the exact location.

Children of Christopher Mummey

1. Rebecca Mummey

born: 1787/8 Maryland
died: 27 Sep 1875 New Castle, Morgan Co., OH
spouse: Thomas Hill (1791-1871)

The oldest known child of Christopher Mummey is identified in 'Twelve Children' as "Mrs. Rebecca Hill." The 1850, 1860 and 1870 Morgan County censuses show a Rebecca Hill, wife of Thomas Hill. Since the ages and places of birth are compatible, and living with the Hills is an Elizabeth Mummey, this is assumed to be the identical person.

While Rebecca may have moved to Morgan County with her family in the early part of the century, it is likely that she was already married, as nothing is found in the Morgan County marriage records. In the 1830 census, the Hills are living in Meigsville Township. By 1850 they have moved to Bloom Township, and in 1860 and 1870 are in the town of New Castle in Meigsville Township. Lake's 1875 atlas shows their residence on a map of the town, which is now called Neeleyville.

Thomas' occupation is listed as that of a saltmaker, a common trade in the early days of the county. The pre-1850 censuses show other individuals living in their household, which could mean that they had children, but no record has yet been found.

The identity of the Elizabeth Mummey living with them is unclear. A reasonable explanation is that she is a relative acting as a housekeeper. One source lists an Elizabeth as child of Christopher Mummey, and this could be her. Another explanation would be an illegitimate child.

While their death dates are entered in county records, no indication of a burial site has been found. They should be at Mt. Olivet church, as they were founding members, according to Robertson, page 413. Similarly, the fate of Elizabeth Mummey is unknown.

2. Joshua Mummey

born: April 1792 Virginia
died: 31 Aug 1853 Morgan Co., OH
buried: McKendree Cem., Morgan Co., OH
married: 1 Jul 1817 Washington Co., PA
spouse: Catherine Hammond (1795-1894)
children:
            21. Rebecca                    1816 OH
            22. William Hammond     1820 OH
            23. Sarah                        1822 OH
            24. John
            25. Samuel                      1825 OH
            26. Ursula                       1827 OH
            27. Mary (Polly)              1829 OH
            28. Benjamin H.              1832 OH
            29. Nancy Ellen               1834 OH

The oldest known son of Christopher Mummey probably was born shortly after his parents arrived in Brooke County from Baltimore. The exact year of his birth is uncertain, but is most likely 1791. In a pension claim made in January of 1851, he said he was 59 years old.

He grew up in Brooke County, and was a 21-year-old carpenter when he served in the War of 1812. He was five foot nine, and had blue eyes, fair complexion and sandy hair. At Charlestown, he joined Captain John H. Elton's company of the 1st Regiment of Virginia militia as a private, to serve a term of six months.

After his discharge on March 22, 1813, Joshua returned home to Brooke County. On July 1, 1817, he married Catherine Hammond, a daughter of John and Ursula Hammond. They were married by Isaac Leffler, a justice of the peace, at his house across the state line in Washington County, Pa. About this time, Joshua's parents moved to Harrison County, Ohio, but there is no evidence that he moved with them.

In 1819, Joshua and Catherine moved with her parents to Morgan County, Ohio, settling near them in Bloom Township. Some time between 1823 and 1830, they moved to Tyson Run, a stream in Meigsville Township, where they raised their family. This may have been in conjunction with Christopher Mummey's move to Morgan Co.

Joshua likely was the first Mummey to settle in Morgan County. The first reference to him in the official records of the county comes in 1819.

When Joshua died in 1853, he was buried in nearby McKendree Cemetery. His widow stayed on the family farm for 10 years until 1863, when she moved to Clinton County, Iowa with other members of the family. Four of her children had married children of neighbors John and Edith Smith, and a large parts of both families moved west in five covered wagons.

In 1878 she moved on to Odebolt, Iowa to live with one of her daughters, and died there, a few months short of her 100th birthday.

However, not all of her family moved with her. William Hammond Mummey stayed in Ohio, settling in what is now Noble County and was the progenitor of a large family.

3. John Mummey

born: 1795 Pennsylvania
died: 1863 Meigsville Twp., Morgan Co., OH
buried: McKendree Cem., Morgan Co., OH
married: 18 Jun 1826 Morgan Co., OH
spouse: Sarah (Sally) Hammond (1796-1876)
children:
            31. David                           1819 OH
            32. Jacob F.                       1827 OH

Confusion abounds in the details of the history of this line of the family. Robertson, the Hammond article, family bible records, and DAR information all state that David was the son of John and Sarah Hammond Mummey. None of these sources address that fact that he was born seven years before they were married. For example, the Hammond article says:

Sarah, the 3rd child, married John Mummey, a brother of Catherine's husband. Their children were David and Jacob. They also were farmers of Meigsville township.

Census records consistently list David's birthyear as 1819, and the marriage record in Morgan County seems to be undisputable.

4. Charles Mummey

born: 8 Feb 1797 Brooke Co., VA
died: 1 Apr 1876 Windsor Twp., Morgan Co., OH
buried: Fairview Cem., Morgan Co., OH
married: 11 Jan 1821 Harrison County, OH
spouse: Rebecca Hedges (1799-1874)
children:
            41. Marie                           OH
            42. Susan                           1827 OH
            43. Ephraim                        1828 OH
            44. Mary                            1830 OH
            45. Charles                         1835 OH
            46. Rebecca                       1838 OH

Charles stayed behind in Harrison County, Ohio, long after most of his relatives had moved on to Morgan County.  His brother Joshua was the first to make the move in 1819 and the others, including his parents, had followed by 1830.  Charles and his family didn’t move until 1848.

5. Eleanor Mummey

born: 6 Sep 1803 Pennsylvania
died: 23 Feb 1885 McConnelsville, Morgan Co., OH
buried: McConnelsville Cem., Morgan Co., OH
married: 12 Mar 1825 Morgan Co., OH
spouse: William Hammond (1798-1880)
children:
            51. Ursula                          1826 OH
            52. Benjamin                      1828 OH
            53. Philena                         1829 OH
            54. Margaret Ellen              1833 OH
            55. Eliza M.                        1936 OH

Eleanor was the third child of Christopher Mummey to marry a child of John and Ursula Hammond. She married not long after she moved with her parents from Harrison County. The couple first lived in Bloom Township near his parents, and William worked as a saltmaker. Sometime before 1836, they moved to McConnelsville, where William built a residence and a business building. Her nephew, David, ran a grocery in the building for many years, and later the building became a furniture store. William was a successful business man, being elected trustee of the town in 1842, 1843, and 1844.

The oldest three of their children died in childhood of scarlet fever.

6. Thomas Mummey

born: 12 Feb 1807 Brooke Co., VA
died: 18 Mar 1891 Morgan Co., OH
buried: Mt. Olivet Cem., Morgan Co., OH
married: 25 Oct 1832 Morgan Co., OH
spouse: Elizabeth Bell (1808-1879)
children:
            61. Philena                         1833 OH
            62. John                             1834 OH
            63. Ann                              1836 OH

Thomas is the youngest known child of Christopher Mummey. He was just a child when his family moved to Harrison County and in his teens when they arrived in Morgan County. He married the daughter of John and Elizabeth Bell and settled on a farm in Windsor Township. In 1855 they sold land to his brother Charles and this is the land that continues to be owned by the Mummey family of today.

Robertson provides this family information:

Thomas Mummey was born in Brooke County, West Virginia, Feb. 12 1807, and settled in Morgan County in 1823, coming from Harrison County in this State. His father, Christopher Mummey, first settled in Meigsville Township, and after ten years removed to Windsor Township. His children were Thomas, Ellen, and Elizabeth. Thomas and Ellen are still living. Christopher died on the place now known as the Hutchins farm. Thomas was married in 1832 to Elizabeth, daughter of John Bell, and has since resided in Windsor Township. His children are Philena, John, and Ann. Mrs. Mummey was born in 1808 and died October 4, 1879.

The country was very wild when Mr. Mummey came to it, and he had his full share of pioneer experiences. He recalls being chased by wolves on one occasion, and another time by bears. From his father's home in Meigsville Township he was accustomed to go to the mill at Luke Chute, where sometimes he would have to wait two days before he could get his milling done. There were then no inhabitant on the route he traveled between Tyson's Run in Meigsville Township and Luke Chute, with the single exception of Thomas Tuft, who in 1823 lived in a cabin on the farm where Mr. Mummey now resides.

As Thomas was still alive when this was written, it likely is very accurate.

            216. Harriett                       1856
            217. Clarinda                     1870 OH

There is some thought that Clarinda may not be a daughter, but rather a granddaughter of Richard and Rebecca. Likewise, there is a question of whether Rebecca is daughter of Joshua & Catherine. The Hammond article does not list her, and the dates are difficult to resolve.

22. William Hammond Mummey

John is reported to have died at a young age, probably before 1850 as no census entry is found. He may have been buried in McKendree Cemetery.

25. Samuel Mummey

born: 26 Jan 1825 Morgan Co., OH

            258. Laura A.                     1865 IA
            259. Lillie                           1867 IA

Samuel moved to Clinton County, Iowa in 1855, and on to Washington state in 1894. The move to Iowa was eight years prior to the mass Mummey-Smith migration of five families in 1863. In Washington, he lived in Sultan, the town where his son Joshua was located.

26. Ursula Mummey

born: 1827 Morgan Co., OH

            286. George Alexander      1871 IA
            287. Nellie T.                     1875 IA

Benjamin and Hannah were one of the families that moved to Clinton Co., Iowa by covered wagon in 1863. Shortly after arriving there, Benjamin was drafted into the 14th Iowa Infantry to serve in the Civil War. After his discharge, Benjamin was a farmer in Iowa, living in Clinton County until 1871 when he moved to Boone County and then on to Sac County in 1875.

41. Maria Mummey

born: Harrison Co., Ohio
married: 7 Jun 1849 Morgan Co., Ohio
spouse: James Carver

Maria is mentioned in the article Twelve Children; and her marriage is recorded in Morgan County, but no further information on her has been found.

42. Susan (Susanna) Mummey

born: 1827 Harrison Co., Ohio
married: 11 Mar 1847 Harrison Co., Ohio
spouse: Josephus S. Birney (1824-1904)
children:
            421. Robert M.                  1840 (?)
            422. Margaret                    1848
            423. William Asbury           1850
            424. Mary Elizabeth           1852
            425. Charles Wesley          1858.
            426. Charles R.                  1859
            427. Maria Isabel
              1862

Susan married in Harrison Country a year before her parents and the rest of her family moved on to Morgan County, and evidently she remained behind. A biography of the family appeared in a Harrison County history.  The listed birth date of the first child is probably wrong, considering the marriage date and their ages.  Two Charles may be the same person.

43. Ephraim Mummey

born: 26 May 1828 Harrison Co., Ohio
died: 26 Nov 1911 Windsor Twp., Morgan Co., Ohio
buried: Fairview Cem., Morgan Co., Ohio
married: 2 Oct 1849 Morgan Co., Ohio
spouse: Martha Jane Glen (1829-1915)
children:
            431. James R.                    1850 OH
            432. Elizabeth Rebecca      1851 OH
            433. Susan Maria               1855 OH
            434. Charles Albert            1857 OH
            435. John A.                      1859 OH
            436. Mary E.                      1862 OH
            437. Sarah Vanetta             1864 OH
            438. George Washington    1867 OH
            439. Thomas Jefferson        1867 OH
            43A. Martha Jennie            1870 OH
            43B. William Frederick       1874 OH
            43C. Wesley Franklin         1874 OH

Ephraim and his wife raised their twelve offspring, including two sets of twins, in a tiny cabin that still stands in Windsor township, Morgan County, Ohio. The newspaper article Twelve Children is an excellent review of the family.

44. Mary Mummey

born: 12 Oct 1830 Harrison Co., Ohio
died: 30 Mar 1850 Morgan Co., Ohio
buried: Wells Cem. Morgan Co., Ohio
married: 27 Jan 1848 Morgan Co., Ohio
spouse: James Magers
children:
            441. Charles E.                  1849 OH

According to her brother Ephraim, the family moved to Morgan Co. in 1848. But Mary was married there in January 1848 according to a courthouse record. It is difficult to assume a major household move in the month of January in Ohio. Possibilities include that the move was in the fall of 1847, or that Mary moved earlier with one of the other families.

In any event, the marriage was short-lived, as Mary died at age 19, leaving an infant son. Charles evidently was raised by Mary's family, as he was living with her Aunt Elizabeth and Uncle Thomas in 1850, and then with Mary's parents in 1860. Mary's widower remarried two years after her death to Lydia S. Dearborn.

45. Charles Mummey

born: 26 Oct 1835 Harrison Co., Ohio
died: 20 Oct 1909 Morgan Co., Ohio
buried: Mt. Olivet Cem., Morgan Co., Ohio
married: 23 Oct 1860 Morgan Co., Ohio
spouse: Josephine Sells (1841-1914)
children:
            451. Isabelle                       1862 OH
            452. Melissa                       1864 OH
            453. Myrtle                        1867 OH
            454. Frank L.                     1869 OH
            455. Gabrilla                      1872 OH
            456. Henry                         1874 OH
            457. Lelia                           1876 OH
            458. Joseph                        1878 OH
            459. Elmer                         1881 OH
            45A. Grant O.                    1886 OH

When he enlisted into Company C of the 97th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 9, 1862, Charles was a 26-year-old farmer, five foot four and a half, blue eyes and light complexion. Shortly after enlistment, be developed chronic bronchitis that eventually led to his medical discharge on October 26, 1863. While with the company, he fought alongside Asa Beale Smith at the battle of Stone River, Tennessee. Asa would married Charles's cousin Nancy Ellen Mummey.

After his military service, Charles returned to farm his parents' homestead in Morgan County, fathering a total of eleven children, one of whom is not known.

46. Rebecca Mummey

born: 1838 Harrison Co., Ohio
married: William Hanna

Rebecca is mentioned in the article Twelve Children and is listed in the 1860 census, but no further information on her has been found.

Margaret's husband was the son of George P. Morris, a very successful businessman in McConnelsville, who built the 'Morris Block' on the main square in town. The building remains standing - and occupied - today. Robert took over his father's business upon his death in 1873.

Eliza's husband entered the military at the start of the Civil War as a 2nd Lieutenant in Company H of the 25th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Despite being wounded at Gettysburg, he had risen to the rank of Captain of Company E, when he received this letter from his brother:

McConnelsville, August 15, 1864
Dear Brother
Eliza is in my opinion in a very dangerous state and hope you can make arrangements to come home without delay. If impossible to obtain a furlough you had better resign. Probably you had better resign at any rate. Lose no time.
Truly, your brother F. W. Wood

John resigned his commission the next day and hurried home, but to no avail. Eliza had died 10 days before he even got the letter. He rejoined the service and was Lieutenant Colonel of the 180th regiment OVI by the end of the war.
