Spring Wildflowers I

Spring Beauties grow from bulbs that are very deep. They spread by seeds. They are some of our most abundant flowers each spring.

These are the blossoms of a Maple Tree. We usually don't think of maples blooming, nor are we accustomed to green flowers, but that is what maples and some other trees do. The blossoms will fall in a few days. The leaves come out immediately after the blossoms. The picture below show the appearance of a maple tree in bloom from a distance.

The Toothwort blossoms at the top of the picture have four petals instead of five like the Spring Beauties at the bottom.

Dutchman's Breaches are named for the shape of their blossoms, which look like little pairs of pantaloons turned upside down. They are among the first wildflowers to bloom each spring.

The Bloodroot hides its blossom among its leaves, making them difficult to see.
