Ducks usually congregate in large flocks during the winter; however, this pair was not part of a flock. Perhaps the mild winter, with an abundance of open water, has reduced the need for them to flock together for protection.
The Canada Goose, above, is standing sentry duty while the rest of the flock enjoys the quiet waters of the Killbuck Wetlands. Guard duty is necessary since the water here is shallow enough for dogs to wade.
This winter has been easy on the geese and they are enjoying a sunny winter day.
These pictures of a Mute Swan on Shadyside Lake were taken by Greg Tompkins. Our thanks to Greg for sharing his pictures with us.
Greg also sent us this picture of a "Mystery Bird." It's probably a hybrid of Mallard and one or more domestic species. It's certainly unique in our experience.
