Great Egret

We watched this bird wheel over Shadyside Lake at dusk one evening. He circled over the water several times before alighting on a log that stuck out from a wooded stretch of shore. He settled in to spend the night surrounded by water.

The next day we found him in the Killbuck Wetlands looking for fingerlings or other small game to eat.

Here he has caught a small fish which he proceeded to swallow whole, head first.

Having filled his crop, he settled down on a dead limb to rest and digest his food. This does not appear to be the same lone Egret that we found in the Wetlands last spring. See the May, 2009 edition from the archives (near the bottom of the home page).
