Indiana Birds

Although all of Indiana is within their summer breeding range, we don't often see Green Herons here. This one was by itself, working its way through the shallow waters and shorelines of the Killbuck Wetlands on a late summer day.

We think this might be a second-year juvenile. Notice the reddish appearance of its legs when the sun shines from behind them (above).

This lone Mute Swan continues to be a fixture on Shadyside Lake. We have not seen it flying which suggests that its wings may have been clipped. It may have escaped from someone, or been abandoned here.

A female Downy Woodpecker quickly works her way up a tree limb in search of bugs to eat.
