Fall Flowers


These red pods are the fruits of the Jack-in-the-Pulpit. The green flower pushes up in the spring and only lasts for a few days. They are not common and we have not seen a blossom for several years.


By September, the few leaves of the plant are nearly finished. Then suddenly the seed head shoots up from the bulb and sheds its green husk to reveal a bright red head of fruits. This is a rare sight indeed as we have never before seen these bright fruits. Note the leaves, below.



Sunflowers add a splash of color to a late summer afternoon.


Goldenrod is one of the more abundant wildflowers in late summer. It used to be blamed by hay fever sufferers for their allergies, but the real culprit is ragweed which often grows in the same places.
