This first-fall Blue Bird was still coming to Mick Hardy's feeder in northern Madison County in mid-October. It has a withered left leg which will make it more difficult for it to survive. Our thanks to Mick for these pictures.
This first-fall Cedar Waxwing was part of a flock feeding on seeds on a bright October morning.
This bird is a part of the same flock. It is a mature adult. Notice the difference in coloration of the head and breast.
Somewhere between the previous two birds in its development, this Cedar Waxwing is probably in its first fall, but hatched earlier in the summer than the first one, above.
A bird we seldom see is the Red-breasted Nuthatch. This one has been making quick, furtive visits to the feeder for a few days. We hope it decides to stay the winter and we are able to get better pictures of it.
In a half-century of bird watching, this is the first Blue-headed Vireo we have ever seen. Although partly hidden, its bright eye ring and other marks are clearly visible.
