Spring Wildflowers II

Virginia Bluebells are a wildflower that is difficult to transplant. Their bulbs are nearly a foot beneath the surface. However, given favorable conditions, they will spread into every-wider clusters over the years. This is our favorite patch.

Another shy flower is the Trout Lilly which also hangs its flowers toward the earth. Like most spring flowers on the forest floor, they bloom for only a few days. They have to race to complete their work while the sun shines, for in a few weeks the trees will have leafed out and put the forest floor in deep shade.

Violets are common; patches of them even erupt in our lawns, but they have a beauty and color we might appreciate more if they were less common.
