One of the joys of the spring season is watching the warblers pass through Madison County on their way to northern Michigan and Canada where they spend the summer. They are in their full breeding plumage in the spring.
The Yellow-rumped Warbler is the most abundant, and one of the first to arrive. The reason for their name is apparent in these pictures. Note also the yellow spot on the top of the head.
The American Robins used to migrate south in the fall, but lately more of them have been staying in Madison County year-round. This pair established a territory near the back of our house this April. Their cheerful songs and flashes of orange breast make them a welcome presence.
In late April, the robins built a nest on a drain pipe of our house. The female began spending most of her time on the nest, starting April 27. We will keep an eye on these robins and report developments.
This Cecropia Moth was snapped as it clung to the side of an old building in Lynchburg, VA. Our thanks to Regina Forbes for this picture.
