We were alerted to the presences of this female Shelduck in Shadyside Lake by Dennis Maxey. The Shelduck is a native of Eurasia and those found in the wild in North America are classified as "exotic" meaning they are non-native birds that have probably escaped captivity and become feral.
This Shelduck was very cooperative, even showing us its feet and the feathers under its wing when asked.
Here the Shelduck is seen with a female Mallard for size comparison; they are nearly the same size. This Shelduck was tolerated by other ducks, but not accepted as a member of the flock.
Here is another unusual duck. The duck at the top of the picture is a male Gadwall. While Indiana is within the Gadwall's winter range, we seldom see one. This one had taken up with a flock of Mallards (male at bottom of picture) in the Killbuck Wetlands after apparently being separated from its flock.
