Indiana Flora and Fauna

Milkweed pods have opened so that the winter winds may scatter their seeds to places where the warm spring sun will help them sprout. Notice the geometric pattern in the close-up below.

Monarch Butterflies depend on the leaves of the milkweed plant for food during the larval stage. The feathery filling was used during World War II to fill life-preserver vests.

An old bird house, abandoned by the swallows for which it was built, is still full of character.

A Ground Hog, or Woodchuck, pokes among the autumn leaves before beginning its winter hibernation.

A Sweet Gum stands bright in the late November sunshine as the last colorful tree of the season.
