Two deer wandered through the woods, browsing on the first green sprouts of spring. They may be a mother and her yearling daughter. This is the larger of the two.
This is the smaller, and thinner, of the two deer. Notice how her flanks are sucked in.
As is typical of deer, these two were very alert to every sound. Squirrels running through the leaves constantly distracted them.
A glimpse of the photographer was enough to send them flying through the woods. This one shows the white "flag" of the underside of her tail for which this species is named. The flag is a visual warning sign for other deer in the flock. Their coloration blends so well with the woods that they can vanish in plain sight.
