The Shelduck is not among the 867 species listed in the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America. However, Sibley makes brief mention of it under the heading of "Exotic Waterfowl." It is native to Eurasia and rarely seen in North America. Most of those seen are escapees from zoos. However, this one does not have a leg band which suggests that she may have somehow made the journey from Europe or Asia to find a home on Shadyside Lake.
This female Shelduck is very much alone. Not only are there no others of her kind about, but the Mallards, with whom she occasionally tries to associate, will have nothing to do with her. She may be found many days on the northern Shadyside Lake (see map).
