Notes:
The Ball Special Widemouth replaced the Ball Special. It
was sold with glass lid/zinc band and metal lid/metal band fittings.
Usually, the words “Made in U.S.A” are embossed on
the jar.
During World War II, the production of widemouth
jars was prohibited by the War Production Board. Thus these jars were not made from 1942 until 1947. After the war, the jar was brought back in
the new rounded-square shape, similar to the Ball Perfect Masons.
Beginning with the 1957 canning season, cup and
ounce graduations were added to one of the side panels of the jar.
Starting about 1960, the word ‘Special’ was
dropped from the embossing. See the Ball Widemouth for the successor jar.
